R2-D2 Is Now a Tamagotchi Pet

A long time ago, in a galaxy not so far away, Tamagotchis were all the rage. The portable digital pets debuted in 1997, and nearly a quarter of a century later, fans are getting the Tamagotchi-Star Wars collaboration they didn’t necessarily ask for but are definitely happy to see. As The Verge reports, you can now carry a pixelated version of R2-D2 in your pocket.

Instead of a classic Tamagotchi pet, the updated gadget features the tiny droid from the Star Wars universe. Using three buttons, you can charge the robot on your screen, clean him, and teach him up to 19 different skills. The R2-D2 Tamagotchi also comes with two built-in mini-games, including firefighting and holochess, and seven more you can unlock. And if you leave your little R2 all by itself for too long, a band of Jawas will come along and run off with him.

For collectors, the most exciting feature of the new toy may be its special shell. The traditional egg-shaped exterior is decorated to look like R2, and the character’s name is even emblazoned beneath the screen. Players can opt for the classic blue-on-white pattern or the transparent blue “hologram” shell for a more retro feel. No news yet on a C3PO version to keep R2 company—but anything is possible at this point.

Both the regular and hologram R2-D2 Tamagotchis are now available through Amazon for $20. If you’re feeling nostalgic, here are more facts about the original pet-raising game.
