James Cameron’s Titanic (1997) achieved awards, box office glory, and lots of critical acclaim, but a previous movie about the 1912 tragedy boasted something Cameron’s film lacked: a star who had survived the actual sinking.
Saved From the Titanic was a silent film that premiered in 1912, just weeks after the Titanic perished, and featured a 22-year-old model and actress named Dorothy Gibson, one of some 700 passengers who escaped on a lifeboat. As for how Gibson’s performance measures up to Kate Winslet’s Oscar-nominated one, we’ll never really know. No copies of Saved From the Titanic still exist today.
