On September 28, Amazon announced a new collection of devices to make your home a bit smarter. This new lineup includes products like a robot that will monitor your home while you’re away, a flying indoor security camera, and a new smart thermostat that’s Alexa-enabled to adjust the temperature.
The Amazon Smart Thermostat, available for pre-order at $60, is Alexa-compatible and can be controlled via voice commands through your Echo Dot or Show 5. If voice commands aren’t your thing, you can use the Alexa app to customize a temperature schedule for when you’re at home or out of the house. Amazon partnered with Resideo, the company that makes thermostats for Honeywell Home, to get this project off the ground, and the company claims its efficient design will help you save at least $50 a year on your energy bills. And if this is your first time using a smart thermostat, you can take advantage of the step-by-step instructions in the Alexa app to help with installation.
Other highly anticipated products in the lineup are the Ring Always Home Cam, a flying indoor security camera with far more maneuverability than a mounted model, and a robot named Astro that uses Alexa to monitor your house while you’re away. Astro’s capabilities don’t stop there: It also has a screen for video calls (on wheels) and a little cubby to apparently deliver beer around the house. Unlike the thermostat, you’ll have to request to be exclusively invited to order the flying security camera and an Astro. (If you’re curious, the Astro is currently priced at an eye-watering $1000.)
