Netflix Book Club Launches in November with Nella Larsen’s Novel Passing

Whether you’re an avid reader or someone who picks a book up every once in a while, you probably know that some of the most popular TV series and movies got their start between the pages of a book.

Netflix loves an adaptation, and many of its hit originals—like Bridgerton, The Queen’s Gambit, and To All the Boys I Loved Before—lived on readers’ shelves long before they were queued up on their screens.

Surprisingly, it’s taken until 2021 for the streaming service to launch its Netflix Book Club. It’s hosted by Orange is the New Black star Uzo Aduba and comes with a companion social series called But Have You Read the Book?

Here’s what we know so far.

What is the Netflix Book Club?

The NBC gives you exclusive access to behind-the-scenes knowledge on the latest book-to-screen adaptations headed to Netflix. Each month Aduba will announce a book to be spotlighted.

You can read the book before you’ve seen the Netflix adaptation or wait until after you’ve watched the newest episode of But Have You Read the Book? on the Still Watching Netflix Youtube channel or Netflix US Facebook channel. There’s no wrong way to be a part of this book club and there are no obligations.

The NBC opens a dialogue among a community of readers eager to discuss how a book has been brought to life on the screen. The creators and actors behind these Netflix original adaptations also join in on the fun with Aduba as they talk about the process of making these films and series in But Have You Read the Book? over a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

What is the Netflix Book Club pick for November?

Do you have your tbr list ready? You’re going to want to jot this down. The first pick for the Netflix Book Club is Passing by Nella Larsen.

The book tells the story of two Black women who are able to cross the color line and pass for white in 1929. One chooses to live as a white woman while the other remains deeply entwined in the culture and community they were both born into and is theirs by nurture and heritage.

The film of the same name, directed and written by Rebecca Hall, stars Tessa Thompson and Ruth Negga. All three creatives will sit down with Aduba for the inaugural episode of But Have You Read the Book? to discuss the film and the choices that were made in bringing its source material to life.

The episode drops Tuesday, November 16, which is six days after the movie premieres on Netflix Wednesday, November 10.
