On December 17, 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home, the third of Sony and Marvel’s Spider-Man films, will hit theaters.
There’s plenty of things to look forward to in this one, from the addition of Doctor Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to the return of old-school villains like Doc Ock. But in a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, Tom Holland revealed something quite interesting and perhaps even a little bittersweet: This third Spider-Man solo film may be the last one we get.
“We were all treating [No Way Home] as the end of a franchise, let’s say,” Holland said. “I think if we were lucky enough to dive into these characters again, you’d be seeing a very different version. It would no longer be the Homecoming trilogy. We would give it some time and try to build something different and tonally change the films. Whether that happens or not, I don’t know. But we were definitely treating [No Way Home] like it was coming to an end, and it felt like it.”
Will there be more Spider-Man movies?
From what Holland had to say, it’s hard to tell if there will be another Spider-Man solo film beyond this third movie. There’s yet to be more than three straight Spider-Man films from Sony starring the same actor. And on the Marvel side, just one character has a fourth solo movie in the world: Thor, who will star in 2022’s Thor: Love and Thunder.
But Holland also said some things that cast some doubt on whether this really will be the end of Spiderman’s solo adventures. “So this one scene, [we didn’t know] if this would be the last time [we were all working together.]” he said. “[It] was heartbreaking but also really exciting because we’re all moving into the next chapter of our careers. So sharing that moment with them was maybe the best day I’ve ever had on set. I don’t think I’ve cried like that ever.”
Even if No Way Home is the end of the Spider-Man solo films, that doesn’t mean Holland won’t appear in any more MCU films after that. There’s always a lot going on in the MCU, so there’s a chance fans will see Peter Parker appear in some other crossover movies.
