Mattel Just Released A New Fighter-Pilot Barbie Inspired By Top Gun: Maverick

When Top Gun came out in 1986, it became the highest-grossing film of the year, earning just over $176 million domestically at the box office. Ever since then, there has been chatter about a sequel. The original film’s director Tony Scott was planning on making one but sadly passed in 2012. The long-awaited follow-up to the film, Top Gun: Maverick, will be released on May 27, 2022, and there’s a new character that’s already getting immortalized in doll form.

Released by Mattel, this new collector’s edition Barbie is based on “Phoenix” (played by Monica Barbaro), a pilot trainee who will appear in the upcoming film. You can get it for $40 at select retailers like Walmart and Amazon, and while it’s currently sold out at Target, you can sign up to get notified when it’s back in stock.

The “Phoenix” Barbie doll shows the character in her pilot trainee uniform. The green jumpsuit features plenty of pockets and an American flag on her left shoulder. On the front of the suit, it shows her name and an ace of spades card patch. Though this last detail may seem odd, it’s based on a scene from the film between “Phoenix” and “Rooster,” a character played by Miles Teller, and who is the son of “Goose” from the first film. The doll also comes with a set of aviator sunglasses, dog tags, a watch, and a red and black helmet with her name splashed across the front.

Although Top Gun: Maverick won’t arrive in theaters until next spring, we already know a lot about the plot. For example, Tom Cruise’s Pete “Maverick” Mitchell becomes a Naval flight instructor to a group of pilot trainees. In addition to “Phoenix” and “Rooster,” other pilot trainees are expected to factor heavily into the film’s storyline.

Get your collector’s edition Top Gun: Maverick “Phoenix” Barbie doll at Walmart or Amazon for $40, and make sure to check out the film when it’s released on May 27, 2022.
