After years of Black Friday creeping into Thanksgiving, many stores are pushing back against the trend. Some of the biggest retailers in the country now give workers the opportunity to stay home for the holiday and enjoy time with their families and friends. Walmart started closing for Thanksgiving Thursday in 2020, and Target followed suit in 2021.
Businesses across industries—from department stores to grocery chains—have announced plans to pause retail operations for the holiday. Aldi, Trader Joe’s, and Costco won’t be catering to customers looking for last-minute stuffing and cranberry sauce on November 24. And if you’re hoping to fit in a home improvement project right before the in-laws arrive that afternoon, make sure you have all necessary tools on hand: Lowe’s and The Home Depot will be closed, too.
